Proto-Aereic exhibits a residual vowel harmony that divides its nouns and verbs into two classes. While there is no restriction on what vowels can occur together in a single root, a word's membership in a harmonic class determines the quality of the vowels in its suffixes. An example would be the neuter plural suffix, which is -uˣ for nouns in the first harmonic class and -yˣ for nouns in the second harmonic class.
Below is a chart detailing the correspondences of vowels across the two classes. The first vowel is for the First Harmonic Class, while the second is for the Second Harmonic Class.
ə does not alternate.
There are quite a few vowels that are pronounced identically but alternate with different vowels when a suffix containing them is attached to a word of a different harmonic class.
