In jiq̃e, rather than using tense on verbs, nouns are marked for time. This is marked through ablaut, by changing each vowel in the root (any diacritics remain). This marking can often be translated as something like "(that) did," "(that) does," or "(that) will."

Past tense: Pre-palatalization (<h> = /ç/)

a -> ha
e -> he
i -> hi
y -> hy
o -> ho
u -> hu

Present tense: Use base form

Future tense: Each vowel has a counterpart
a -> e
e -> i
i -> y
y -> o
o -> u
u -> a

Example:

Base form: jiq (1First person (person)
speaker, signer, etc; I
.SGSingular (number)
one countable entity
)
jiq "I"; "I (that) do"
jhiq "I (that) did"
jyq "I (that) will"
