An noteable aspect of Modern that's developed is its distinction between plain and palatalized consonants. Palatalized consonants, when not expressing their own grapheme, usually are matched by their plain equivalent with the addition of an acute accent. These formed by a series of sound changes: the introduction of an epenthetical /i/ in between consonant clusters, the merging of /i/ and preceding consonants in unstressed syllables, and the movement of alveolar and velar palatalized consonants to the palatal series. In the written script these consonants are marked with separate characters.
