In categorizing species, based on the abilities of a healthy adult
Categorization starts from top, moving down a level if they don't have the indicated characteristics
Class
- observed characteristics
- further explanation of point
- assumptions about relevancy to animacy and moral standing
Moral Capacity and Culpability (A5)
- understands and can identify moral and immoral (causing unnecessary, unjustified harm) choices
- are capable of weighing that in decision making, and acting accordingly
- it's appropriate and non-abusive to hold them responsible for their choices
Individual Desires (A4)
- pursues more than just their needs to stay healthy, but also their personal desires
- ie. all cats may need exercise to stay healthy, but one cat may desire chasing around a ball, and another may desire jumping and grabbing feathers
- capable of psychological suffering
Mobile (A3)
- ability to move freely to pursue needs
- likely to feel pain/suffering of some kind if injured, needs aren't met, etc.
Sessile (A2)
- living
- can only move via growth (ie. Extending roots toward water) or external forces to pursue needs
- may be capable of experiencing suffering
Non-living (A1)
- not capable of experiencing suffering, doesn't hold moral standing
