The origin of the Amazons and the Amazon language is a controversial topic that has given rise to numerous hypotheses. The modern Amazon varieties are, along with the modern Basque language, believed to be the only Paleo-European languages extant in Europe. The Amazons and Basques have therefore long been supposed to be remnants of the Paleo-European population of Europe, inhabiting the continent before the arrival of the Indo-Europeans and Uralics from Asia.
[might reword once details worked out and so less literally stolen from wikipedia]
TO ADD:
- Distribution and archaeological sites attributed to Proto-Amazons
- Migration maps: central europe > greece > anatolia / anatolia > greece > central europe
- Connection to Minoans, Cycladeans, and Anatolians (dark hair, bull/aurochs worship, matriarchal, genetics?, pottery?)
- Dark faced burnished ware
- Connection to Sardinians (bull/aurochs worship, hunter-gatherer, pottery?) - Ozieri Culture
- Evidence against both (location, only simple metallurgy, lack of complex buildings, different religion)
- Connection to Tyrsenian (basically none but worth discussing cos paleo-european)
- Connection to Basque (basically none but worth discussing cos paleo-european)
- Impact of agricultural Starčevo and later Vinča cultures - Proto-Amazons or relatives?
- Adoption of some agricultural practices (animal husbandry, some basic crops) ✎ Edit Article ✖ Delete Article
