Background
The Roman presence in Syria first started in 64 BCE when it was annexed by the Roman Republic. Although the Levant was under Roman rule, the vast majority of its residents still spoke Koine Greek and various Semitic languages, such as Aramaic and Hebrew. These languages continued to be spoken there for the next few centuries. In the early Middle Ages, however, Byzantine soldiers from the Balkans were employed in the Middle East to fight against the Sassanids, but never returned home, instead deciding to stay in the Middle East. They interbred with the Greek and Aramaic-speaking locals, and ended up becoming the Suric people.

The vast majority of Surites were Christian. When the Levant was conquered by Muslims, many Surites did not like having to pay a tax because they were of a certain religion. As a result, many Surites converted to Islam, and their language became more and more influenced by the Arabic language of their Muslim rulers. These Muslim Surites eventually became Arabized, and no longer spoke Suric.
