The Empire:
Üñłi is a lot smaller than it once was, this is because it was one of the Great Empires of old and it controlled a considerable portion of Igleis along with the other empires at the time such as Dírma but this is not to imply that they were allied with anyone, at the time all land was controlled by one of the empires and all of these empires were natural enemies. Of course as previously mentioned Üñłi no longer holds that land or influence and this came during the Great Fall when the subjigated peoples held rebellions all conveniently at similar times but also independently which led to attacks from anywhere and everywhere and this was one of the causes for the Great Fall but there were other hardships faced by the Üñłiga such as The Plague.
The Plague:
The Üñłiga were struck by a plague that wiped out a large chunk of their population which was unfortunantely timed as it came when their empire was falling and this only aided the rebellions against them leading them to lose a lot of land without resistance as their soldiers were sick and dying before their enemies even arrived. The plague's first symptom was a sore and red mouth and as such this phrase became commonplace, hence why there is such a short and specific phrase for having a sore mouth, that being "itai". It is believed that this plague may have been caused by the face paint they used at the time for war containing a poison that entere their skin and thus their blood stream, the poison would lie dormant in the plant but once exposed to the heat of the human body it became active and seeped through the pores, the most likely culprit is a plant common in the cold North of Igleis and the population is mainly concentrated within Üñłi. It is also believed that by losing so much land the Üñłiga spirit and thirst for conflict was severely weakened thus, they did not go to war and did not don their war paint which allowed their population to recover over time.
