Learn how to pronounce the phonemes found in New Maiya.

New Maiya has a total of 36 phonemes, including 5 diphthongs, 10 vowels, and 21 consonants. Some vowels make the same sound but lengthened. Going down the alphabet I will give an English example, and New Maiya example to explain how each sound is pronounced. Letters within slashes (e.g. /ɶ/) indicates IPA.

*/a/ is pronounced slightly differently depending on the word, but this is not indicated in writing. usually, if -a is not the stressed syllable, pronounced as /ɶ/. otherwise, pronounced as /a/
-->Example: goga "fish" /'go.gɶ/
-->Example: bako "dog" /'ba.ko/
-->Example: yuman "someone" /'juman/ (because root word man "person" is /man/)

**same as original but lengthened
-->Example: raópa "climb" /ra.'o.pɶ/
-->Example: níáe "collection" /ni.'a.ɛ/
-->Example: uosújei "jewellry" /u.o.'su.d͡ʒei/

***same as /ɛ/ but lengthened in standard NMYA dialect, pronounced as /e/ in Nova Maiya dialect
-->Example: érŕei "spread" /ɛɹ.ɾei/ in standard NMYA

****letter "i" is sometimes pronounced as /i/ as e in English "me" in Nova Maiya dialect without being lengthened, illegal in standard NMYA dialect
-->Example: mine "woman" /'mi.nɛ/ in Nova Maiya (standard Maiya equivalent is míne /'mi.nɛ/

*****SILENT S: the triphthong "ais" often contains a silent s. this is a vestigial feature from New Maiya's predecessor, Maia. "ais" only has silent s if followed by a soft consonant (s,z,y,r,j,...). "ais" NEVER contains a silent s if followed by a hard consonant (k,t,d,ŕ,...) or a vowel. "ais" always contains silent s if it ends a word
--Example: zalais "weather" /za.'lai/
-->Example: maisyo "honour" /'mai.jo/
BUT: paiske "warehouse" /'pais.kɛ/
BUT: aisugo "steel" /ai.'su.go/
