Karkuvian Language

The Karkuvian language is the vastly dominating linguistic entity of the land known as Karkuvia and its many regions. The people, organised largely into city states, tribes and Φuecatamus, or 'free farms', with the occasional hegemonic city or league of allied city states, all speak various languages descended from 'common Karkuvian'.

My aim for Karkuvian was to make a language that felt "lived-in" - as if it had already evolved past a few proto-forms, and had a writing system that quite loosely fitted the language in its current state, and that could inform much of my worldbuilding into the future.

Karkuvian has an alphabetic orthography with a semi-redundant syllabary for its stop consonants - the consonants mark for vowels, but they also require the complementing vowel to be spoken as such. Stops do not distinguish between unvoiced, voiced or fricative variants, instead becoming those variants in certain phonotactic situations. Karkuvian possesses fairly complex noun grammar with four declension systems, and a similarly complex verb system with telicity (rather than tense) and person markings making up verb inflections.

I aim to make a conscript (or two) for Karkuvian into the future, basing it very loosely on the Iberic scripts, as well as evolving a small number of closely related daughter-langs and a far larger number of dialects. I also aim to work on the history of my various dialects and languages, seeing many of them become prestige dialects, as well as fall out of favour. Eventually, my aim is that I could use Karkuvian in a story. Who's to say? Semu takeusi.
