About African African (is Ifricési [iʃ ifriceʃi] or sa lamba ifricánu [ʃɐ lɐmbɐ ifrikɐnu]) is a Romance language of the Indo-European family, descended from the Vulgar Latin spoken in the Roman provinces of Africa and (to a lesser extent) Mauretania. Its closest relative is the only other extant Southern Romance variety, Sardinian, although that language has acquired a number of features from other Romance languages (Catalan, Spanish, and Italian) not present in African. It also shares a number of features with Sicilian and Neapolitan, mainly due to areal influence, such as the presence of retroflex consonants and extensive vowel reduction and metaphony. African was also influenced by native Berber languages of southern Roman Africa like Zenati, by the Vandalic language of the post-Roman Vandals, and later by the Classical Arabic of the various caliphates that jostled for control of the region following the Muslim conquest of the Maghreb until Christian reconquest in the 12th-14th centuries.
