OtherObvlique has a vertical vowel system. Like other languages with such a system, these vowels are realized as different qualities of backness (and to a much lesser extent, roundedness), but are predictable based off of other processes, and are not considered unique phonemes. Labialized consonants (including laterals, although they're considered more "prelabial" consonants) generally trigger backness and often rounding, while alveolar and straight lateral consonants tend to trigger fronting. Regular velars, /r/, and bilabials are often more centered, albeit bilabials may trigger mild rounding.

However, such vowel modification is considered allophonic, and not mandatory for the vowels; when it does occur, it often only shifts moderately, so a back vowel would fairly likely be mid after a front vowel, and a front vowels would be mid after a back vowel. Closed vowels are generally more fronted and less rounded; open vowels are generally the opposite.
