About Not-Canonical Voont
BIG DISCLAIMER THIS IS NOT ON SAHAR ANYMORE
THERE IS A NEW VOONTIC BRANCH IN DEVELOPMENT WHICH IS VERY DIFFERENT
The Voont language is spoken in extreme southeast Old Amaia, an area known as Voont Chint, and adjacent areas of Yerlan. It is a Voontic language descended ultimately from Proto-Pemme and distantly related to Not-Canonical Amaian, Thuun, and Ezian. Its nearest relatives are the other Voontic languages, which are spoken by relatively small populations, largely in the mountain regions of eastern Amaia and northwestern Yerlan.
Voont is a fusional language that, like the Amaian languages, carries complex syntactic and morphological marking of information structure: topic, focus, etc. Unlike Amaian lects, however, Voont is a mostly monosyllabic language, with roots generally taking up only one syllable. However, through derivation and inflection, words can become much longer. Voont is noteworthy in having an exceptionally large number of syllabic nuclei for the region: vowels can vary in nasality, length, and phonation. Lexically, it borrows much less than Amaian, perhaps explainable by its isolated location in a valley surrounded by mountains on three sides.
Voont lacks phonemic nasals: the voiced stops alternate with nasal stops, conditioned by the presence of lack of nasalization on the syllable nucleus. While there are five or less vowel qualities that contrast in each nasality/phonation/length combination, there are eight total vowel qualities.
