About Yari
Yari is a language spoken by the Yari people in Amazonas state, southern Venezuela. According to the 2011 Venezuelan cenus, their population numbers around X. Its name derives from the word for "people", yari. Most speakers are monolingual and it has no natively-used orthography, although the Latin alphabet is used for education in the most acculturated villages.
The Yari language is traditionally spoken in the Yari territory, no further north than the Orinoco at roughly the same latitude as San Fernando de Atabapo, a small town and the former capital of Amazonas. The territory extends eastward into the western Parima Mountains. Otherwise, the territory is demarcated by both the Colombian-Venezuelan and Brazilian-Venezuelan borders, and the Yąnomamö tribe's land. Some of the most acculturated speakers live in urban areas outside the traditional territory, such as Puerto Ayacucho (the capital of Amazonas) or even Caracas.
Yari is noteworthy for its rare word order: object-verb-subject in transitive clauses, and subject-verb in intransitive clauses. However, as the language uses ergative-absolutive alignment, the word order is described as absolutive–verb–ergative by some scholars. It is highly polysynthetic and agglutinative.
