About Zakynthian
Zakynthian is a conlang that is a mix of Greek and Turkish, spoken in the nation of Zakynthia, a nation that is primarily composed of the Ionian islands off of the coast of Greece.
After the Ottoman Empire suffers a defeat in WW1, a Turkish diaspora leads to a large Turkish-speaking population to grow on the Greek island of Zakynthos. The language spoken here is still mutually intelligible with Turkish for awhile, just with a hint of Greek seemingly sprinkled in here and there.
Not long after a coup in the Greek government Greece joins the Axis powers, later resulting in their defeat in WW2 and loss of now larger Turkish-majority areas in the western part of their country. This language, despite now being spoken in its own nation, begins being heavily influenced by the Greek language, resulting in the loss of mutual intelligibility with Turkish that is seen today. The language is likely to become endangered within the next few centuries as it becomes increasingly Hellenized, though it is still spoken throughout Zakynthia.
