Welcome to the Terranese language! These lessons are provided for you, the reader, to learn about Terranese and the rich culture behind it. They are also here to help me, the writer and creator of Terranese, to help myself with inconsistencies and problems with my language that I need to address. It’s also to help me learn my own language!

This lesson will be about some basic information other conlangers on this website might be interested in, and because I feel like having some basic knowledge about Terranese beforehand will help in understanding the language better.

First, Terranese is a syllabilic language. It is synthetic, agglomerating, and features a lot of morphemes. Morphemes can be piled onto one word to make very specific words. It’s not polysynthetic, but can get very long words.

Another thing is word order. Terranese is primarily VSO with some VOS allowed- there is a full article called Sentance Structure I wrote if you’re interested. The most important thing to remember is that Terranese is highly head-initial and so verbs always go first.

Now, pronunciations!
I’m not great at IPA so I’m going to put a full list of proper pronunciations here for anybody whose like me and can’t remember IPA for anything. This list also includes irregularities that need to be remembered in Terranese, since I’m terrible with the pronunciation changer PhoMo thing.

A- “ah”, as in apple
Ao- “ow”
Ai- “I”
Ay- “ay”, as in gay
E- “eh”, as in wreck
Eu- “ew”
I-“ie”, as in little, or “ee” as in me if it’s the last letter.
O- “oh”, as in mow
U-“ooh”, as in zoo
D- as in dad
H- as in ha or hang
Ch- as in change, or “k” if it’s the last letter
K- as in lock
Kh- as cork, think a softer, more aspirated K
G- as in goat
Gh- as in girl, think a softer, more aspirated G
J- as in giant
N- as in new
R- as in red
Rh- spanish r tap, as in rojo
Rr- rolled r, “err”
T- as in total
Z- as in zap
Y- as in yellow
Sh- as in should

With that out of the way, the final thing to know before setting off on your Terran journey is that there are no labials in Terranese. Don’t bother with your lips in this language. Terranese is an alien language created for- you guessed it- aliens. These aliens are a species made by me, the creator, called the Terrakuon. They are canine-like and have no lips, so they are unable to produce sounds like B or M. They can produce W sounds as in Ao, however, and do have mouth muscles that allow for that, but they can’t produce the lip-touching sounds we humans can.

That’s all for this lesson! I hope this gave you some understanding of Terranese! Nuozerr!
