Aspects: Perfective and Imperfective
  • Imperfective – actions that involve a habit and repetition.
  • Perfective (or Aorist) – actions without further context, whose singular execution suffices.

The Unkish perfective is unmarked and equivalent to the "default" Germanic verb forms.

The Unkish imperfective evolved from the Germanic frequentative verb indicator *-lōną. It now used to mark the imperfective in all tenses. It is formed by taking the verb root + stem (e.g. 'vleotán' [to clean] → 'vleota-'), turning the stem vowel to a nasal ('vleota-''vleotâ-') and appending -l + class 3 weak verb ending to it. Here: Ëka vleotâ (I clean [right now, something up]) vs. Ëka vleotâlê (I clean [because I'm usually doing that]).

Examples:
  • "Þau geis" (You go) vs. "Þau gâlés" [infinitive: gán] (You regularly go)
  • "Vois gruobóms" (We dug [action that was relevant at a specific point]) vs. "Vois grabôldïéms" (We regularly dug [e.g. construction worker talking about his former job])
  • "Si funþäîbíþ" (She will find [unique event happening in the future]) vs. "Si funþâbléþ" (She will regularly find [she is taking a job involving finding things over and over again)
