Cave Angel Language has five verb "tenses" (one is technically a mood):
  • Remote past - used for events that happened before the speaker's metamorphosis (i.e. they either were not hatched yet, or were a non-sentient larva at the time)
  • Medial past - used for events that happened during the speaker's remembered lifetime, up to the past few days or so
  • Recent past - used for events that happened anytime in the past few days to now. the recent/medial dividing line is fuzzy and depends on the person and context
  • Present - used for events happening now. Just a normal present tense
  • Irrealis - used for events that have not currently happened. depending on the sentence structure and additional particles, this could be future, hypothetical/conditional, or negation.
    • Irrealis verb + future particle = future tense
    • Irrealis verb + sentence is in the form of a question = negation
    • Irrealis verb without either of those conditions = subjunctive/conditional/hypothetical events

The irrealis form is the unmarked tense.

CVA also has 4 aspects:
  • Experiential - used for events that (have) happen/ed at least once; "I have run (at least once)"
  • Frequentative - used for events that happen/ed repeatedly or habitually; "I run (regularly)"
  • Progressive - used for events that are ongoing at the considered time; "I am/was running"
  • Perfective - used for events that are already complete at the considered time; "I have run (I am finished running)"

The experiential form is the unmarked aspect.
