About Nthatu
baNthatu is a language spoken by the amaThatu people who live in the Kgalagali desert. Thatu society is structured around a strict class hierarchy between nobles, peasants and merchants. Nobles organise themselves into noble houses who own peasants, land and all the cattle in their territory. Nobles also get to elect a high king who serves as a primus inter pares. Merchants are also organised into houses but they lack voting rights. Some baNthatu speakers are hunter-gatherers and live outside Thatu society and call themselves amaNqowane.
