So, this is a slightly more complex issue that concerns the change of voiceless consonants at the end of roots, i.e.
/p/ - /t/ - /k/ - /þ/. Each of these phonemes can be realized as two different allophones. Each allophone can only appear in a certain vowel-surrounding. In detail, the vowel preceding the final consonant in a root determines both the pronunciation and grapheme since Mathal is a phonemic orthography.
phoneme | allophone | realisation |
---|---|---|
[a,ɪ]_Vshort [oː, uː]_Vshort | ||
[ɛ,ɔ,ʊ,ʏ,ø]_Vshort [aː, iː,oː,uː,yː,øː]_Vshort [aɪ,ɛɪ,ɔɪ,øɪ,aʊ,ɔʊ]_Vshort | ||
[eː,ʊɪ,ʏɪ]_Vshort |
If a Suffix is added to the end of a root, then the phoneme /p/ can be realized as either [pʰ] or [b] depending on the preceding vowel or diphtong. The phoneme /p/ never appears after [eː], or the diphtongs [ʊɪ] or [ʏɪ].

[a,ɪ,ʏ,ø]_Vshort [eː, iː,yː,øː]_Vshort | ||
[ɛ,ɔ,ʊ]_Vshort [aː,oː,uː]_Vshort [aɪ,ɛɪ,ɔɪ,ʊɪ,ʏɪ,øɪ,aʊ,ɔʊ]_Vshort |
If a Suffix is added to the end of a root, then the phoneme /t/ can be realized as either [tʰ] or [d] depending on the preceding vowel or diphtong.

[aː]_Vshort |
If a Suffix is added to the end of a root, then the phoneme /k/ can be realized as either [kʰ] or [g] depending on the preceding vowel or diphtong. The phoneme /k/ never appears after [aː].

[ɔ,ʏ]_Vshort [aː,eː, iː,yː,øː]_Vshort |
If a Suffix is added to the end of a root, then the phoneme /θ/ can be realized as either [θ] or [ð] depending on the preceding vowel or diphtong.
