There are three vowel qualities, /i/ /a/ and /u/. All three contrast for length (short and long) and tone (high, low, and falling). The high vowels /i/ and /u/ become mid vowels [e] [o] in closed syllables, while /i/ and /a/ are brought further back following uvulars.
