This article provides just an overview of all known Kashtyrian sound changes, nothing more. There is an extended version (currenty WIP) if you want to know more background information.
In this article, everything is noted in IPA, not in any transcription or in the Kashtyrian latin alphabet. Ø stands for the null sound, i. e. that a sounds has been eliminated. ᴀ is used for the open unrounded central vowel.
... in a beautiful table:
Change | Special conditions |
---|---|
I-eliminiation | |
i → Ø | at the end of the word |
Vowel shortening | |
a,i,u → ᴀ,ɪ,ʊ | |
High vowel opening | |
ɪ → ɪɛ̯ → je → e ʊ → ʊɔ̯ → wo → o | only before syllable coda |
e → ɛ o → ɔ | when coda is velar/glottal or ᴀ is the following vowel |
Diphthongization & h chain shift | |
h → Ø | at beginning of word |
h → j | between vowels |
ᴀjɪ,ᴀjʊ → ᴀɪ̯,ᴀʊ̯ | |
ʔ → h | not in a few loanwords |
h → Ø | single h at the end of the word |
h → ħ | every h in coda |
Consonantal loss | |
p,t,k,h,x,ʃ,s,f → Ø | every word-internal obstruent coda eliminated |
Kashtyrian umlaut | |
ʊ → ʏ → ɨ | if i, ɪ or e are in the next syllable |
o → ø → e | if i is in the next syllable (very rare as i only occured through compounding) |
Generation of breathy vowels | |
ɛ,ɔ → ̤æ,ɔ̤ | |
Vowel loss | |
i,ɪ,e → Ø | only in unstressed syllables, not between clusters* |
*there are specific phonetic environments where this change happened, find them in the extended article | |
R-fricativization | |
r → ʁ | |
ʁ → ɹ | before another consonant |
Consonant voicing | |
p,t,k → b,d,g | only in the onset of non-initial (secondary) stressed syllables out of clusters |
